WOMEN BEHIND BARS: LIVED EXPERIENCES OF FEMALE PERSONS DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY DURING PANDEMIC

The pandemic created an impact on every human life including the female persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in correctional institutions. It is important to identify the lived experiences of these female PDLs to fully understand and derive into programs that will help them achieve the wholesome reformation and make them a law-abiding citizen when they go back to their respective communities. The researchers explored the lived experiences of female PDLs during pandemic. Specifically, on the problems encountered by the informants inside the rehabilitation facility during pandemic and their coping mechanisms to address these problems. Qualitative research method was utilized using the eight female PDLs of Metro Bacolod District Jail -Female Dormitory.
Colaizzi’smethod of data analysis was utilized in analyzing and interpreting the data. There were six emergent themes formulated which are: Resiliency and Resourcefulness behind Challenges,Realizations over Difficulties, Behavioral Adjustments is a key for survival, Positive Reinforcement for Positive change and growth, Well Balanced Physical and Mental Health and Faith and Optimism.
The problems encountered by the female PDLs arises commonly on the human basic needs which allowed them to develop behaviors such as resiliency, patience and optimism to adapt and survive inside the rehabilitation facility. It was also found out that the informant’s physical, mental, and spiritual growth increased despite being challenged.
It is then recommended for the jail administrators to continue giving the restorative programs and have a development on considering the human basic needs of the female PDLs inside the facility for a continuous effectivity of the rehabilitation towards them.
