CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BY JEEPNEY DRIVERS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PUBLIC UTILITY VEHICLES MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

Abstract
The upgrading of Public Utility Vehicles is one of the current schemes being pursued because of the rise of vehicle accidents involving aging or damaged cars. The modernization of public transport has been happening already to many countries and they have upgraded their public transport to much better vehicles such as trains, buses, and other form of transportation. This study aims to determine the challenges faced by jeepney drivers on the program modernizing public transport.
A descriptive design was utilized to conduct the empirical part of the study and quantitative method in gathering of data. A total of 120 jeepney drivers had been surveyed in selected routes of Bacolod City, Philippines. The survey was conducted last March 2023 and ended April 2023. Frequency Percentage was used in determining the profile of the respondents, the degree of challenges were determine using the mean and Man Whitney U test in the significant difference.
The findings revealed that the degree of challenges of jeepney drivers of Bacolod City, as to the PUVMP is high in terms of areas changes of fares and time implementation. Further, there is a variation as to significant difference in the degree of challenges encountered by the jeepney drivers when group and compared to profile variables. In conclusion, the jeepney drivers of Bacolod City who used traditional jeepney faced various challenges regarding PUVMP. On the other hand, drivers of modernized jeepney strongly supported the PUVMP which created numerous job opportunities for drivers.
