PERCEPTION OF BUSINESS OWNERS ON HIRING EX-CONVICTS

Small-medium businesses of business owners considers the qualifications and background of the individuals to become part of their companies as they wanted to ensure the quality of work and avoid possible risks on hiring unqualified employees. Thus, it is important to know the perceptions of business owners on hiring ex-convicts to know the things that they consider on hiring their workers and to provide opportunities for the ex-convicts to be fairly screened to prove their suitability for the job opportunity.
This study aimed to assess perception of business owners on hiring ex-convicts by taking the responses collectively and separately regarding their age, sex, educational attainment, and type of business as well as the areas of work competence, character, and reformation. The respondents were 100 business owners, the study was conducted on March 11, 2023 in Bacolod City (Western Visayas, Philippines). Likewise, it aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in the respondents' perception when grouped and compared based on their profile variables. The researcher used descriptive comparative research design and Mann Whitney U-test.
The perception of business owners on hiring ex-convicts was generally high, regardless of their profile variables and areas. There is a disparity between the perceptions of business owners on hiring ex-convicts in terms of highest educational attainment. Thus, the researcher highly recommended that the policymakers and local officials should create a City Ordinance, which sets standards of qualifying an ex-convict to allowing them in applying a job again. Where it needs requirements and qualification in-order to regain trust and positive moralities for the business owner.
